Product Description

Handwoven, plant-dyed rug (157 x 206cm plus fringe)

Product Code: TMS009

Artisan Teresa Mansilla works tirelessly from her small workshop, high in the hills above the sea on a tiny island of the Chiloé Archipelago in Southern Chile, to produce these beautifully textured, heavyweight rugs made from 100% sheep's wool.
Fleece for each rug is first washed and then spun on an huso, or drop spindle. Teresa then gathers leaves and flowers, according to the season, which she boils to create a dye bath in which to immerse the yarn.
Each rug is woven from a kneeling position, on a traditional horizontal loom, or “quelgo”, a simple rustic construction built using timbers sourced locally, and which Teresa sets up on the floor of her workshop. It takes her approximately two weeks to complete a large floor rug or blanket.

Care Instructions:

100% plant-dyed sheep's wool
Handwash in cold water, mild soap, dry flat. Or dry clean

Please note: This item is individually handwoven, precise dimensions may vary slightly. The rug is fringed at one end only – it works equally well as a stunning bed cover.

It is possible that you will encounter small pieces of twig or plant debris in the woven fibres of this rug – these will have become tangled in the yarn during the dyeing process, and are harmless reminders that this is not a factory – made item!

Here at añañuca we are committed to supporting rural livelihoods. Weaving is a traditional skill in Chilote communities, that enables women to contribute towards household incomes. Your purchase will help to support this traditional way of life.
