Maule Rope

MAULE ROPE - 100g

We use the term "rope" loosely here, for this yarn is spun from a lovely soft sheep's wool to create a seriously chunky "yarn" about the thickness of your (average!) finger. It is not dissimilar to a pencil roving although the difference is that it has been spun and lightly felted to add strength. In Central Chile this thick yarn is traditionally used as the weft for their blankets and rugs. It can also be used to great effect as a textured detail in weaving - either in the warp or weft. Or why not try felting it into bag handles? Or have a go at some extreme knitting!

The wool has been spun for us by a group of women from Central Chile, based in a small village in the Andean foothills. They work with the wool of the sheep most commonly reared by smallholders in this part of Central and Southern Chile: typically Romney Marsh or Suffolk. They spin their yarn on a drop spindle and use recipes handed down from their mothers and grandmothers to extract the best colours from the plants that they are able to find locally.  The hot, dry climate rewards the women with a range of plants that give a vibrant range of "summer-garden" colours.

PLEASE NOTE: WE ALSO SELL THIS YARN BY THE METRE @ £1.50/METRE - PLEASE CONTACT US WITH YOUR REQUIREMENTS.
