Product Description

Handwoven, plant-dyed scarf

Product Code: KEL006

We think that these scarves are truly a work of art! Richly-textured sheep's wool yarn is handwoven in multi-stranded colour combinations, with an unusual fleece 'dreadlock' feature.

Designer Marcia Mansilla works with skilled artisans on the remote island of Chiloé in the south of Chile to interpret the colours and textures of the landscape through the rich palette of colours that can be extracted from native plants. Fleece from the island's sheep is spun by hand using only a drop spindle, before being dyed with plants collected in the locality. The resulting yarn is then woven on a rustic horizontal loom.
Every scarf is a unique creation – yarn is dyed in small batches and colours vary according to the season in which the plants are collected.

The word 'kelgwo' originates from the indigenous huilliche term for a horizontal loom (quelgo), the traditional loom used on the Chiloé archipelago in southern Chile.
