Product Description

Handwoven, plant-dyed rug (60 x 125cm)

Product Code: CHO021

These sheep's wool rugs, or "lamas", have been woven by indigenous Mapuche women from rural communities in the Araucanía region of southern Chile. Using traditional techniques that have been handed down to them through generations, women first wash the fleece, then spin and ply the yarn using a simple huso or drop spindle. Plants and minerals are collected from the locality in order to extract the colour with which the sheep's wool is then dyed, before being woven on a traditional upright “Mapuche” loom.

On average, a rug of this type takes:
3 days to wash and spin the fleece
1 day to dye the yarn
3 days to weave

Each rug is a unique reflection of the rich colour palette of the landscape and the season in which it was created.

Care instructions:

100% plant-dyed sheep's wool
Handwash in cold water, mild soap, dry flat. Or dry clean.

Please note: this item is individually handwoven, precise dimensions may vary slightly.

It is possible that you will encounter small pieces of twig or plant debris in the woven fibres of this rug – these will have become tangled in the yarn during the dyeing process, and are harmless reminders that this is not a factory – made item!

By purchasing this rug you will be helping to support a rural family in southern Chile, and are contributing to the survival of an ancient textile tradition. Here at añañuca we work closely with Chilean fair trade organisations that provide support and training opportunities to marginalised rural families, predominantly indigenous Mapuche in origin, in the Araucanía region.
