Handwoven alpaca scarf in natural fleece colour

Product code: ASO080

This beautifully-soft alpaca scarf has been crafted entirely by hand by Aymara women from Northern Chile. Fleece for each scarf is spun and then woven in a design chosen by each weaver. Although contemporary in style, these scarves form part of a long tradition of textile weaving in Andean communities, where alpaca fleece is highly prized for its luxurious softness, durability and superior insulating qualities.

The weavers are members of an indigenous association which endeavours to maintain Aymara cultural traditions whilst also seeking to provide income opportunities for women at home. They meet once a week to offer each other support and companionship.

P'aqu comes from the Aymara word meaning “reddish yellow”, and is believed to be the origin of the word 'alpaca', referring to the commonly occurring natural fleece colour. Alpaca fleece comes in 22 natural shades from white through fawns, browns, and greys to almost jet black.
